Calculate Units In My Drink

If you drank alcohol that is pure, 100%, mixed with nothing else, just pure alcohol you would probably spit it right out. Not bad for antiseptic uses, cleaning things and other commercial uses, but to drink it.. not so nice.

Therefore we deliver alcohol to our brains via our livers and stomachs, by first wrapping it up in nicer tasting things like beer, wine, sherry, port, whisky.

That means that only a small part of the total contents of the bottle or the glass you are drinking is alcohol. That is the percentage.

Beer is made of of water, hops etc, and somewhere between 3% and 8% of your drink is pure alcohol.

Wine is often between 7% and 15%

Spirits like vodka whisky gin tend to be in the region of 40%

How Do I Calculate My Alcohol Units

multiply the percentage of alcohol by the volume. The divide by 100 if centilitres or 1000 if millilitres.

5% beer multiply by 330ml can = 1650. Divide by 1000 as the volume of the can is represented in ml mililitres, thereby giving 1.65 units

14% wine multiply by 75cl bottle = 1050. Divide by 100 as the bottle volume is represented in cl centilitres, thereby giving 10.5 units

40% whiskey multiply by 75cl bottle = 2800. Divide by 100 as the bottle volume is represented in cl centilitres, thereby giving 28 units

What Are My Suggested Units Per Week

In the UK, current guidelines suggest men and women consume no more than 14 units per week. Guidelines also suggest several alcohol free days per week. If you do this you are unlikely to be in need of a family member calling an Intervention on you.
