CRAFT Intervention

The CRAFT intervention is a process, a program, that has three clear goals

  1. Influence the A.I. (Addicted Individual) to seek and accept treatment.
  2. Interim process to target a reduction in quantity, frequency and impact of addiction.
  3. Engage C.O’s (Concerned Others, Family, Friends) in positive life changes.

CRAFT is a process of heavily supported family therapy that works to introduce behavioural change with the concerned others that results in the above goals.  A CRAFT premise is that the Family has the most powerful and natural motivation to bring about change. That the family are best placed to influence, and the family just need the right tools to bring about a successful change.

CRAFT tilts the landscape. The family find a new perspective and response system that targets their well being. The enabling / co-dependency patterns of control and avoidance leave a family stuck in repeated, unsustainable behaviours that repeatedly do not work in the long term.

CRAFT can be stand alone, yet here, is often used in conjunction with other Intervention processes. All interventions here are bespoke to the family.

This is a home based on going Intervention where skilled Interventionists, online support, regular meetings, assessments, exercises and learning by experience take place.

CRAFT Interventions are very effective when the A.I. has dug in and refused treatment, continues to use and abuse any form of active addiction. The family and friends learn to reinforce behaviours that influence the A.I. to reduce addiction, whilst learning to support and reinforce behaviours that are in tune with family wellness, recovery and positive life experiences.

This Intervention is not a surprise, it does not confront, rather is a simple effective proven Intervention employed within the existing family environment.

C.R.A.F.T. Community Reinforcement And Family Therapy evolved from addiction treatment pilots and studies in mid seventies. Robert J Meyers, PH.D. , Brenda L. Wolfe PH.D. and Jane Ellen Smith have been particularly successful in developing this scientifically proven Family Intervention method. They have released substantial academic support. The book, “Get Your Loved One Sober” is a best seller and The CRAFT Intervention Program

CRAFT is used extensively in the community as well as bespoke Interventionist led private Family Interventions.

The Intervention Service is happy to provide and support A CRAFT Family Intervention Program where it is clear that this model is the best fit.
